Wedding Happenings for 2014: Cocktails, Dessert Bars and Food Trucks

Wedding receptions are becoming more fun, creative and tasty thanks to the latest trends in nuptial celebrations: cocktails, dessert bars and gourmet food truck cuisine.

With a nod toward the romantic age, many brides are turning to the cocktail hour to help kick off an elegant wedding reception. Sophisticated barware is great for serving cocktails, such as mint juleps in traditional silver cups (think Derby Day) with crushed ice and a sprig of mint or vodka drinks in heavy Mad Man-style crystal.

Dessert bars are still in vogue, but forget the tiers of cupcakes. Now dessert bar offerings are more unique and complement the decor. Brides are offering their guests candied apples or chocolate chip cookies with glasses of milk. Or splurging on gourmet ice cream in out-of-the-ordinary flavors, such as New York Cheesecake or Almond Joy. Some caterers are getting requests for dessert bars that focus on a single color, such as all white or all pink sweets with coordinated decorations.

Food truck cuisine for wedding receptions has grown in popularity for the past few years, and the trend continues to boom. For one thing, the cost of gourmet food truck food on a per-person basis can be considerably lower than that charged by a caterer. And for another, everything can be prepared on the spot in the food truck’s rolling kitchen. As an added bonus, food truck chefs continue to amaze the food-loving world with their creative take on ordinary ingredients.

Many brides are opting for fresh and local dishes, often requesting produce from area farmers and food producers. Others are showcasing their own heritage and that of the groom by serving foods that represent their families’ country of origin. Of course, the dishes are get a new twist, such braised brisket sliders for a Jewish wedding reception.

Three favorite LA food trucks are Hang 10 Tacos, Greenz on Wheelz and The Hungry Nomad.  Each one is operated by a veteran catering crew that knows how to make a wedding reception – or rehearsal dinner, bachelor party or bridal luncheon – beyond special.

Hang 10 Tacos makes the best tacos in LA. Greenz on Wheelz serves the freshest sandwiches wraps and salads on wheels. The Hungry Nomad provides mouth-watering dishes that combine European and California ingredients and flavors.
