Food trucks are creative and on top of the latest foodservice trends. Around the country, food trucks cook and serve almost every cuisine available, and some have creatively combined ethic tastes to create new foods and flavors. In cities with large Muslim populations, halal food trucks are now pleasing a diverse group of diners and foodies.
Halal is an Arabic word meaning “permitted” or “lawful.” Halal foods follow the Islamic dietary guidelines found in the Qu’ran. Followers are not allowed to eat haram or “forbidden” foods, such as:
- Pork or pork by-products
- Birds of prey
- Land animals without external ears
- Animals not slaughtered properly or not slaughtered in the name of Allah
- Blood and blood by-products
- Carnivorous animals
Today, halal food is not just for Muslims. Two Halal Grill Food Trucks in Washington, D.C., serve gyros, pitas and shish kabob to hungry customers. In NYC, the 49th and 6th Halal Food Truck regularly parks at its namesake intersection, which is just across from Rockefeller Center. Another New York favorite is Tariq’s #1 Halal Food Cart, which is all the rage despite having no Twitter account. The Halal Guys is an Austin, Texas, food truck offering full meals, wraps and a selection of appetizing dips.
In addition to trendy food trucks, halal foods are available in many Middle Eastern grocery stores. Because Halal foods are becoming more mainstream, some national supermarket chains have offered halal turkeys for Thanksgiving.
A Chicago-based, non-profit organization called the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) promotes and certifies halal food. IFANCA has representatives in Canada, Europe, China, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Singapore and approves official halal food products in more than 50 countries. We love the diversity that food trucks bring to the public.
